Operating Room Technician

Duties and responsibilities: Operating room Technicians assist the operating team by preparing the room for the patient, monitoring the patient's vital and cleaning after the procedure is complete. Operating room technicians take charge of ensuring the proper equipment is sterilized and available, this requires supervision of a surgeon.    

Salary: $44,330 annually

Education: Operating room technicians usually need to complete some form of formal education in the field. Operating room technology programs generally consist of 9-29 months of study. Students learn and train in classroom setting and clinical environments.  Students learn infection prevention and control. Common course topics include aseptic procedures, anatomy, microbiology, and physiology.  

Demand or Need for this profession: Surgical technology is not a state-regulated profession.  However, the BLS stated that many employers look for certified operating room technicians. The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting, offers the Certified Surgical Technologist designation. Candidates must have graduated from an accredited program, completed on-the-job training or accumulated a minimum amount of work experience. Certified technicians can renew their credentials every 4-5 years by completing continuing education.
